Whether you know it or not, forms of gambling has been a common activity in the Star Wars universe for thousands of years. Many alien worlds take part in gambling. The most common commodity used is credits. But spice goods, spaceships and even slaves are also sometimes used in a wager.
Perhaps the most famous thing ever won by a character in Star Wars is the Millennium Falcon. This iconic ship was give to Han Solo by Lando Calrissian after the latter lost a wager. Solo went on to use this ship in the war against the Galactic Empire.
In Star Wars: Episode One – The Phantom Menace a young Anakin Skywalker is freed from slavery thanks to gambling. Qui Gon Jinn makes a wager with the alien Watto. The bet is that if Anakin wins a dangerous pod race then Watto must hand him over to Qui Gon. In the end, after an exciting race Anakin manages to win and is set free. Interestingly, Qui Gon cheats by using his Jedi powers during the wager. This cheating is not noticed by Watto, however.
In Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Finn and Rose explore a planet where gambling is a major part of society. They end up finding the Canto Bight Casino, which contains several upper-class aliens gambling with high numbers of credits.
In the Star Wars expanded universe there are even more casinos described. These can be found in many different planets throughout the galaxy. Inside these there are several different gambling games played. These were invented for the Star Wars universe and do not exist in the real world.
In the video game Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic there is a mini game called Pazaak. This two-player card game was created in the ancient days of the Old Republic. There are four different ways to win against an opponent. The most common method is to simply outscore them. However, there are other more complicated tactics available. Players can attempt to bust out the opponent or used a “golden Card” in the event of a tie.
